Lauren Pirie

Artist member since 2018
Toronto, ON

Lauren Pirie is a multidisciplinary artist, creative director, and curator with an interest in environment, immersive experience, and socially-engaged art. She’s curated collaborative art experiences, large community events, and intimate gallery shows, including recent activations at Pride and MOCA Toronto. She was a co-founder of grassroots art and environmental organization The About Face Collective and has worked with organizations like Sketch, Centre for Social Innovation, Skate4Cancer, and DDBX Community Projects. Lauren recently spoke at TEDxYouth on the subject of art and its power as a tool for inward reflection and outward connection—subjects that often show up in her personal practice. Her work includes a range of media and scale, from delicate, intricate ink drawings to large scale murals, as well as painting, sculpture, and installation, exploring environment in relation to connection, desire and healing.

When did you start making art, and why?

I think I have always made art. When I was 5 or so, I would use my Grandma's ottoman as a booth to sell my drawings to my family for $2. At that point, it was probably to stickers, or save up for a hieroglyphics set.

Favourite medium

Ink on paper. I mostly use acrylic inks (which a lot of people assume are watercolour) and micron pens. And recently more acrylic on canvas and lighting and fabric for soft sculpture
